Double crochet is one of the most popular and versatile of all crochet stitches. It’s a simple stitch that’s easy to learn and fun to do.
The double crochet stitch, abbreviated dc, is one of the six most common crochet stitches. You can work double crochet in rows, joined rounds, or continuous spiral rounds. It is used in all kinds of projects, so this is a good basic stitch to learn. (Stearns, S., 2023, December 7)
First, you need to yarn over your hook before inserting it into a stitch (st).
Next, you’ll take your hook, insert it into the stitch, yarn over your hook again, and pull it through. Now, you should have three loops on your hook.
Yarn over again and pull the hook through the first two loops.
You should have 2 loops on the hook at this point.
Yarn over one more time, and pull the hook through those last two stitches (sts).
Ta-da! You’ve just made a double crochet (dc).
Here is a video on how to double crochet for those of you who learn by watching. The interesting thing to note about this video is that it teaches you to also identify the back bump of a crochet chain (ch). This is really handy for creating an aesthetically pleasing starting chain (Yarndrasil (n.d.)):
