Vintage Crochet and Knit Patterns

When you are making your beginning slip knot and chain, it’s important to get it just right. You do not want it too tight. You never want to hear the sound of the yarn squeeking over the hook as you pass stitches along. As a beginner I had a terrible time with keeping my yarn too tight on my hook and in my hands.

You can either rip it out and try it over, or you can try a trick to use a larger hook to make your beginning chain. Always check your gauge!

I’ve rarely seen a pattern that says “make a slip knot”. It is one of those assumptions that pattern authors tend to make, that the crocheter already knows how to do this. It is one of those unspoken directions in regards to crochet. This is very much like a cooking recipe that assumes you already know how to do all the basic things that the author does after years of experience in cooking.
